This grant was used for general operating support, for Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service’s (LIRS) programs, education and advocacy work for refugees and immigrants who are in a state of limbo. Funds were were contributed by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans employee giving campaign.
The goal of LIRS is to ensure that refugees are employed in a way that realizes long term stability and success for their family. For many children served by LIRS that do not have a family to care for them, LIRS places them in loving foster care homes that enable them to thrive and achieve their potential.
LIRS has resettled over 6,000 unaccompanied refugee children into foster care and were one of two agencies who were at the lead in advocacy to protect children in immigration detention. LIRS also advocates for providing immigrants with more humane treatment while they are in legal proceedings.
The LIRS mission is in response to God’s love in Christ; to welcome the stranger, bringing new hope and new life through ministries of service and justice. LIRS has a variety of programs for vulnerable migrant populations: Resettling refugees from a variety of countries. protecting refugee and migrant children, including victims of trafficking, and advocating for fair and just treatment of asylum seekers and victims of torture and trauma.
LIRS is a cooperative agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod and the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. With initiative and stewardship, LIRS develops creative solutions for uprooted people regardless of race, ethnicity or religious beliefs.
