John Kuckelman ‘09 spent Fall Term 2007 in Morogoro, Tanzania, as part of Wartburg College’s Diers Program. A biology major with plans to pursue a career in medicine, he worked in a medical setting while also studying Swahili and learning about Tanzanian culture and religion. He saw the HIV/AIDS epidemic firsthand and observed problems that arose for patients unable to get the CD4 blood test required for properly treating the disease. Kuckelman said patients who could make a long and difficult journey from the Morogoro area to the nearest blood-testing site could be treated for the disease, usually with successful results. Those who could not be tested went without treatment. When he witnessed the death of a young woman who was unable to make the trip, he was moved to action. Upon returning to his studies at Wartburg, he put together a plan for funding a CD4 blood testing machine for St. Mary’s Hospital in Morogoro. With help from the Wartburg Development Office, he has been submitting grant proposals and seeking support from area organizations.
