Milwaukee, Wisconsin
$31,012.41

The grant was used to support the successful transition of the Thompson Community Center, an incorporated nonprofit, to a program of Lutheran Social Services of WI & Upper MI, Inc.

TCC has a cafe which serves lunch three days per week. The cafe has become an important part of the week for many to socialize and have a warm, nutritional meal. One participant said, "It is the three meals per week that I don't have to eat alone". And another individual stops in daily for lunch with his newly acquired friends before going to the nursing home to visit his wife.

The dollars received from the Foundation were utilized for general operational expense of the Thompson Community Center (TCC). TCC lost its major donor a few years ago. Grant dollars were utilized to assist with expenses during this transitional period until funding from other sources, including new programming, can be developed. From the programming perspective the transition went very smoothly. As hoped, program participants saw little or no change.

TCC serves older adults of the entire Fox Valley Area. The Center has no residency, age, nor income restrictions for participation. Center participants typically range in age from 40's through 90's and above. The social services of the Center, including information and referral, reach those who are not able to come to the facility. This expands the Center's ability to meet the needs of a diverse aging population. TCC also provides older adults with volunteer opportunities both internally and for the community.

This grant was made possible by money raised in the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans 2005 Employee Giving Campaign.
