LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEFLUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF

Baltimore, Maryland
$34,618

A grant made with gifts from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' 2005 Employee Giving Campaign helped support work overseas, including  addressing forgotten disasters.

LWR works with partners in 35 countries to help people grow food, improve health, strengthen communities, end conflict, build livelihoods and recover from disasters.

This grant also provided much needed funds for Lutheran World Relief's ongoing development work.  Following is a story of one project participant.

Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, has suffered from armed conflict between rebel groups and government forces for more than 35 years.

But one man grew weary of the fighting, and made a conscious choice to live a life of peace instead. A former combatant Sarodin Kakim literally chose farms over arms, laid down his weapons, and, with support from LWR, became an organic farmer.

He started with just corn, but today, Sarodin proudly displays his organic corn alongside peppers, eggplant, lemongrass, string beans and squash to visitors. His successful farm has earned him a national farming award and enables him to provide for his family.

“My income is now double,” he said, compared to when he only grew corn.
